Product Care

To ensure the condition of our products please follow care instructions.

FURNITURE

Avoid placing furniture in areas with extreme variations of temperature and humidity. Placing a wooden piece in a room which fluctuates from being humid to being dry can cause the wood to crack as it absorbs and then releases moisture.

Avoid placing furniture directly in front of vents. Wood naturally contains a small amount of moisture. Placing a piece where it is bathed in a constant stream of dry air, whether from central air-conditioning or central heating, may cause the naturally occurring moisture to evaporate and may lead to cracking

Avoid exposing your piece to strong sunlight which can cause discoloration in finishes.

Avoid writing directly on the surface of your piece, as it may leave small indentation marks.

Avoid leaving water or other spills on your piece for any period of time as it may cause wood, veneers, and lacquer finishes to warp or bubble. Simply dab spills dry with a soft paper towel or a soft clean sponge. We recommend the use of coasters under glasses to avoid moisture rings.

Avoid spilling acetone or alcohol based fluids on your piece as they may dissolve finishes and leave unsightly spots. This does not apply to mirrored pieces which are impervious to most spills.

Many household items such as rubber-based placemats, phones, alarm clocks, lamps, computers, and decorative accent pieces use rubber-based plastic pads on the bottom. To prevent discoloration and chemical reaction with the finish, rotate these items regularly so they do not remain in the same place for extended periods of time. In the event that you cannot rotate a piece, we recommend the use of undyed felt pads instead.

Avoid placing hot objects on surfaces since heat can damage the finish. Always use protective pads under hot dishes and plates.

WOOD & LACQUER

Avoid using glass cleaners on anything but glass and mirror. Ammonia can cause discoloration and dull the finish.

Our lacquer pieces come in both high-gloss and medium-gloss. Clean lacquer with a soft cloth or duster. Avoid rubbing hard as this may produce tiny scratches.

MARBLE

Marble is porous and stains easily. Wipe off anything spilled on marble immediately. As with most materials (except glass or mirror) use coasters to avoid moisture rings.

For tough stains, use nonabrasive cleaners such as hydrogen peroxide.

GRASSCLOTH

Our grass cloth pieces have been sealed with a clear coat of lacquer. The grass cloth finish is actually quite resilient.

Dust grasscloth furniture frequently to prevent accumulations which can be more difficult to remove.

If you spill water or a soft drink on them, simply dab them dry with a soft paper towel or a soft, clean sponge.

Light stains or blemishes may be removed with a soft brush (such as a toothbrush) and soap and water. Again, once you clean a stain, dry the piece immediately.

RATTAN

Our rattan comes in two different types, natural and lacquered. To preserve the look of your rattan dust frequently with a dry cloth.

For lacquered rattan you can use a small amount of furniture polish to restore its shine.

GLASS

Mirrored pieces should be cleaned with glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive cleaners or using rough scrubbing material, as it may scratch the glass.

TABLETOP

Not all stoneware is created equally. In fact, there is not a standard, universal definition of stoneware and the word is frequently misused to describe other ceramic products. At our factories in Portugal, the ancient skills of modeling and decorating are combined with modern technology in a special process that produces high-quality fine stoneware products capable of withstanding everyday use over many years. Manufactured in a single firing system heated up to 1180ºC (2160ºF) our stoneware is very strong and durable. Its glazed surface is fully vitrified which gives it high resistance to both thermal and mechanical shocks.

OVEN, FREEZER AND MICROWAVE SAFE

All pieces manufactured in fine stoneware have high thermal shock resistance, withstanding temperature variations between -20ºC and 250ºC (0ºF to 500ºF). The maximum thermal variation advised is 180ºC (350ºF). All stoneware products can be safely used in the oven, microwave, and freezer. As a precaution, you should avoid placing pieces straight from the oven on a cold surface. Do not use it over a direct flame. Avoid the use of products with craquelée surfaces such as Cristal (grey), Lisboa, Madeira, Pearl Aqua and Riviera in the oven and freezer.

DISHWASHER SAFE

All our pieces are easy to wash and clean and abrasive cleaners can be used without the risk of damaging the surface due to its high durability and low porosity. Most items can be washed daily in the dishwasher. To ensure the items last longer we advise you to make sure that no item rubs or bumps against another during the wash cycle, preventing damage. As a precaution we recommend you wash oversized items and more delicate pieces by hand.

FOOD SAFE

All COSTA NOVA products meet the standards established by International Standards including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with regard to lead and cadmium. They are food safe.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

All COSTA NOVA stoneware products are hand-finished which provides them unique character. Any irregularities, color variations or small imperfections should considered defects, but unique marks of authenticity.

CUTLERY

Made from high-quality stainless steel (18/10), all COSTA NOVA flatware collections are crafted for exceptional durability and sustainable for everyday use. To maintain the original qualities we advise some extra care:

- Remove all the residues after each use, in order to avoid prolonged contact with cutlery pieces;

- For manual washing use hot water, a neutral detergent, and a soft cloth/ sponge;

- Do not use abrasive or mechanical aggressive agents;

- Cutlery should be placed in the dishwasher`s basket or tray; knives separate from other cutlery;

- After each dishwasher cycle, it is highly recommended that cutlery must be removed from the basket and well dried with a soft cloth;

- There should be special care with the knives and the blade of hollow handle knives, due to their extra sharpness. As they are more susceptible to oxidization, they should be carefully dried after each wash. We recommend the with the PVD copper copper finish pieces.

- In order to recuperate the original shine and remove lasting stains from a lesser quality washing, a soft cloth with drops of lemon juice can be used;

- Special materials and/or special finishings, as Fibber/Resin, PVD, Gold-plated or Silver-plated, must be washed only in dishwasher, following the instructions upon described and also temperature not higher than 60ºC/140ºF and detergent with less than 10% of phosphates;

- Do not keep COSTA NOVA flatware in humid places;

- You can rehydrate the resin handles with some rich moisture cream.

Steak knives:

Stainless steel (vintage finishing) and rosewood. Dishwashing is not recommended on knives with a wood handle. Wash after each use with a non-abrasive sponge. Dry with a soft towel to avoid corrosion and spots.

GLASSWARE

Made in Europe, our glassware collections are either made of pressed-glass, our mouth-blown glass using semi-manual methods. All glassware items (including HERITAGE plates) can be safely used in the dishwasher. However, hand washing will prolong the life of the products. To maintain the original qualities we advise some extra care:

- Before placing glasses in the dishwasher it is advisable to rinse them in lukewarm water to eliminate any residues;

- Washing glassware by hand: handwash glasses individually with a non-abrasive detergent, warm water, and a soft sponge or cloth;

- In the dishwasher: place glasses in the appropriate rack to avoid scratches. The washing temperature for the dishwasher should be 65ºC (140ºF) with a rinsing phase at 65ºC (149ºF) and a washing cycle of approximately 90/120 seconds. Carefully dose the brightener, an excess amount may cause iridescence on the glass surface, and a poor amount leaves water drop marks on the bowl. At the end of the washing program, open the door and leave it ajar for 5/10 minutes to vent steam and avoid the formation of halos on the glass due to condensation;

- Dry with a microfiber cloth.
